A cricket match finishes the way you expect it to. This was for sure not the same. Peshawar Zalmi were 74 runs away from winning the match with 5 overs left in the innings. Their middle order was rattled already. Rawalpindi Pindi has done the hard work. The key wickets at the right time were taken by their bowlers. In a strong position that was highly defendable was 215. Bracewell & Samad combined to hit the ball all around the ground in just twenty three balls.
Zalmi secured the win with a 5-wicket victory. Lahore Qalandars registered their biggest successful run chase ever in the history of the Pakistan Super League. Typically, Gaddafi Stadium doesn't see a 200-plus target chased down by teams, but today it did to make it the third time only. After having the worst season of their history last year, this was quite the way to open their 2026 campaign for the team.
Bracewell and Samad Changed Everything
As Zalmi were in need of 74 runs from 30 balls, Kusal Mendis was dismissed at the start of the 15th over. That is nearly 15 and over. Two new batters are coming in. Most sides in that position start calculating a decent losing margin rather than a win. Zalmi did not get that memo.
Bracewell arrived and went hard from the first ball he faced. Samad came in and did the same. The two of them added 64 runs in just 23 balls, and the match was turned completely on its head.
The 16th over was where it started. Bracewell took Rishad Hossain for 18 runs in a single over. Hossain had been very tight before that moment. Clean hitting, no mercy, and suddenly the equation looked different. Then in the 17th over, Samad got after Naseem Shah and took 16 off him. Naseem had also been bowling well up to that point. Two good bowlers took part in back-to-back overs, and the whole game shifted.
Samad finished with 33 off 11 balls. Four sixes. The 18TH OVER against Mohammad Amir finally sealed the deal. Mohammed Amir's over was the decider, evident from two enormous sixes and a four, as spectators groaned at the stadium.
In the penultimate over, Aamer Jamal walked the pitch and hit Naseem for a six and a four. Twenty runs off that over. One run needed off the last six balls. Bracewell finished 35 not out off 17. The job was done.
How Zalmi Got Into Trouble First
The start of the chase actually looked fine. The batting of Babar Azam and Mohammad Haris showed a lot of intent. Muhammad Amir’s first-over was a costly one as two boundary hits came from it, one through the covers and midwicket. The opening duo added 50 runs in the first five overs of the game. Zalmi were ahead of the rate and cruising.
Then came 26 balls without a boundary. Six overs of the over, almost nothing scoring. The asking rate crept up. Babar's wicket fell during that phase. He made 39 and looked set for more, but the long boundary drought cost him his rhythm and then his wicket. Haris fell the very next over for 47. Two set batters went close together, and suddenly the game looked completely different.
Kusal came in and steadied things for a bit. He appeared like he could anchor the chase while launching into the final overs. When Zalmi was dismissed at the beginning of the 15th over, he was in trouble. Bracewell and Samad were brought together, and the rest is already being said in the UAE as one of the great finishes in PSL history.
Yasir Khan Made Pindiz's Total Possible
Before all of that drama in the chase, Rawalpindi Pindiz had put up 214 for 4 batting first. Yasir Khan is the person who made 200 total happen. His astonishing 83 runs off 46 balls was a marvelous innings and it commenced in the most dramatic manner.
First over of the match. Yasir struck a six over square leg that went so far out of the ground, the umpire had to call for a new ball as the over ended. With a new ball like that, the match gets underway. Yasir was consistent. Seven fours and six sixes in his innings. He gave Pindiz an attacking platform, and he gave his partner Mohammad Rizwan the time he needed to settle.
Rizwan did not look fluent early on. He lingered around for a few rounds while Yasir took care of the other end. In the fourth over, Rizwan scored four consecutive boundaries against Ali Raza. Two behind square on the offside, two down the ground. From then on, he looked like a completely different batter. Quick feet, clean strikes, and suddenly the partnership was flying.
The two of them put on 125 runs together at above ten an over. A serious opening stand on any ground. Rizwan scored 41 runs before getting out on 32 balls. Everything was ready until this point.
The Finish and the Total That Fell Short
After Rizwan left, the Pindiz lower order kept swinging. Kamran Ghulam, Daryl Mitchell, Sam Billings, and Abdullah Fazal all hit boundaries inside their first two balls at the crease. Everyone who came in was looking to attack. The last four overs brought 54 runs and pushed the total to 214.
But even while it was happening, the Pindiz camp felt they were short. Head coach Justin Kemp said as much in the mid-innings interview. Mentor Inzamam-ul-Haq conceded. Both men felt the total was slightly short. The team realized they could defend on a pitch which they felt was 15-20 runs short. Defending against a batting lineup that consisted of Bracewell, Samad and Jamal was always going to be difficult at a low-scoring pitch like in the Gaddafi Stadium. It was true. It was not enough.
What This Win Means for Zalmi
In PSL history, there has never been a time when Zalmi has crashed out in the group stage. This outcome upset supporters and injured the brand badly this was a surprising result. They commenced PSL 2026 with much to answer for and much to prove, with many questions still hanging whether they fixed what went wrong in PSL 2025.
Pursuing 215 runs and sealing the victory from needing 74 runs off just 30 deliveries does not answer everything. But it answers a few of them. This team has match-winners in the lower order. Bracewell and Samad showed that in the clearest possible way. Babar got 39 and showed some touch, even if he could not push on to a big score. Haris made 47 at the top. There is something to build on here.
Zalmi have launched PSL 2026 in the right way. What happened in 2025, makes those two points more important.
