Lahore Qalandars had a bad outing on Sunday night. Losing the match to Karachi Kings by four wickets was painful enough on its own. But before the players left, something bigger was happening. Fakhar Zaman was involved in ball tampering, one of the most experienced names in that Qalandars dressing room.
Not a minor penalty. Not a warning. A level III offense that carries with it a match ban combined with it along with it. For a single PSL season, a first-time offense will see a player miss at least one match but not more than two. The hearing for the incident within the next couple of days, with match referee Roshan Mahanama, with Fakhar making clear he is not going to accept all this quietly. He is challenging it.

What Actually Happened Out There

Karachi Kings' chase had been going just fine until the final over arrived. Faisal Afridi picked up the ball from Haris Rauf before handing it over for bowling. He saw something that stopped him.
The ball had moved between Shaheen Shah Afridi and Fakhar Zaman & it did not look right to Faisal. He pulled the second umpire Sharfuddoula into a long conversation. These were not a couple of quick words. This was a proper discussion with both umpires looking at the ball carefully and taking their time. In the end they found the same answer. The ball has been altered. It was exciting.
The Karachi Kings batting duo Khushdil Shah and Azam Khan were called to the middle to choose a replacement ball from six options, each reflecting different stages of wear. Then five penalty runs were added to the Kings total. That is where Qalandars really felt it.

Five Runs That Felt Like Fifty

Before those penalty runs were added Kings needed 14 off the final over. After them the target became nine off six. Most people watching would have immediately felt how different those two equations are. Fourteen off six with Haris Rauf bowling is a real ask. Nine off six is a different conversation altogether.
Abbas Afridi settled it in two balls. He hit Rauf for four and then cleared the rope for six and the match was finished. Two shots. Done. The kind of ending that leaves a team wondering what might have been if those five runs had never been handed over.
After the match Shaheen Shah Afridi stood at the presentation and said he was not completely sure why the penalty runs were even given. He said they would wait to hear from the umpires about it. You could hear the frustration in that comment even if he kept his words fairly measured. The Qalandars camp clearly felt blindsided by what happened in that final over.

The Rules That Made This Possible

This was not sudden or unexpected. While the umpires were operating under the powers of Clause 41.3 of the PSL playing conditions which allow them to check the ball whenever they want. Frequently, irregularly, without any notice. The clause also says they must inspect immediately if they have any reason to believe someone has been working on the ball.
Once they decided a replacement was needed, Clause 41.3.5.1 kicked in and gave the batting side their choice from six replacement balls. Clause 41.3.5.3 is the one that brought the penalty runs. It is straightforward. If umpires can identify who tampered with the ball, five runs go to the batting side. No debate, no discussion. It happens automatically. Both umpires followed the book on this one.

What Fakhar Is Actually Facing Now

Level-III in PSL regulations is not a routine code of conduct charge. It sits in a category that is taken seriously by the board and by match referees. For a first offence within the same season the minimum is one match suspended & the maximum is two.
Roshan Mahanama is known to be a match referee of international stature who deals with such situations diligently. Kent first will listen to the Evidence from the umpires, look at whatever footage is available, and listen to Fakhar’s. Fakhar is going to stick to his guns on this one! He intends to present evidence and put up a defense against the charge.
It all depends on what comes out of that room whether he is going to miss one game or two.

Hasan Ali Was in Trouble Too

Most attention was shifted towards the Fakhar issue but Hasan Ali of Karachi Kings also ended up with disciplinary marks in this game. He received a fine that was 10 percent of his match fee for his celebration upon dismissing Haseebullah in the 19th over.
This is covered under the PSL code of conduct's Article 2.5. Teams should avoid doing things in the direction of a dismissed batter that could be perceived as disrespectful or aimed to entice a reaction from them. Hasan Ali’s celebration clearly wasn’t right
He is not banned. He keeps playing. But losing 10 percent of your match fee is not nothing, and it adds to what was already a chaotic and heated evening of cricket.

Qalandars Are Now in a Difficult Spot

Fakhar Zaman who’s opening the batting for Lahore Qalandars is more than just runs. This is about the type of experience and composure he brings to the top order as the pressure powers up. He has been in bigger matches, bigger tournaments, and bigger situations than most players in this squad, more often than not. The loss of him for even one game alters how the Qalandars have to set up their batting.
Having two matches would be even worse. With two matches at this stage of the PSL, it also meant some shuffling about the lineup, asking someone else to step into a role they aren’t ready for, just hoping the team doesn’t drop points that…
The Hearing is Just Around the Corner. Fakhar will sit opposite Roshan Mahanama and put his point across. The judgment will come next. After that, Qalandars will have a clear idea about their strategies for the rest of the tournament.
Sunday night was difficult. The next few days may not be much easier.
